Do bugs love you? Here’s how to keep the mosquitoes in Belize away!

Want to keep those mosquitoes in Belize away from you? Let me share my secrets with you!

Remember those old Myspace surveys, where you would answer a million different questions about yourself? One of the questions was often, “Are you attractive?” My answer was always, “Yes, mosquitoes can’t get enough of me!” I’m one of those people you should take with you in areas full of mosquitoes, because they come to me and leave you alone. It’s true. In fact, if you pay my way… I will travel with you anywhere and be your bug magnet 🙂 (I just want to travel, ok)

So, how do I keep away the biters? Bug repellent. Lots of it. Long sleeves and long pants are also a great way, but not so awesome in 100+ degree temperatures during the hottest days in Belize. While there are plenty of bug spray options online, in stores near you, and in many stores in Belize… I love making my own!

(Recipes listed at the end of this post!)

Why make my own? When I make my own repellent, I can cater it to my exact needs and make it multi-purpose! Multi-purpose? What other uses could possibly exist? Bug repellent repels bugs. It’s that simple, right? Yes, but it doesn’t have to be! Simple is great, but so is cutting down on the amount of liquids I need to bring when I travel… while keeping it simple.

So, what is my other use, what makes it multi-purpose? I make my repellent out of essential oils, and essential oils (if you pick the right ones!) smell GOOD! So, why pack perfume / body spray… when you can make your bug spray smell good and use that instead!

Attract people, detract bugs… all with one spray? Yes please!

If you’re really into multi-purpose, lets take this a step further! Instead of bug spray, make some bug lotion! Bug lotions can get you 3 benefits. Keep those pesky mosquitoes in Belize away, smell good, and moisturize your skin!

3 uses in one product? Inconceivable!

But. Wait. You can take this one step further. Sprinkle in some Zinc Oxide powder to make this a sunscreen as well!

What!? I know. Mind. Blowing.

But wait, what oils should you use?

One of the things I did as soon as I learned about essential oils, was I clicked through Amazon selecting all the best smells. I spent zero attention on the brand and quality. After further reading, I learned more about the differences between qualities, and ended up not using half of what I bought… ugh.

After some research, I’ve decided to generally stick with NOW essential oils, because they’re affordable and I consider them good quality. However, if you have the money to grab some DoTerra or Young Living oils, go for it! Your probably have a friend or two who sell it, so ask around your social web.

Here are some delicious smelling essential oils, that help keep bugs away. I’ve linked them to where you can purchase them on Amazon. If you do a quick google search, you can find more lists of bug repellent oils. Have a favorite? Post it in the comments!

I still always pack a small spray bottle of DEET for those times when nothing works. Make sure to only spray DEET on clothing, as it can be harmful for your skin. Always wash your hands really well after applying!
