Xunatunich & Cahal Pech Mayan Temples Tours.

From: $139.00

Xunantunich (Mayan for stone woman) is an impressive Mayan site. Getting there is an experience in itself because you will have to cross the Mopan River on a hand cranked ferry. Once you get across the river, you will take a scenic ride or walk up hill to the site. Xunantunich was built by the Mayans on a hill that overlooks the Mopan River and is near the border of Guatemala. It spans about one square mile and has about 6 plazas surrounded by more than 26 palaces and temples. The main pyramid “El Castillo” is 130 feet tall and is adorned with fine stucco or frieze. You can hike to the top and get an amazing view of the surrounding temples and plazas and look across the border into Guatemala. Most of the structures are believed to have been built in the Maya Classic era around 200 to 900 AD.
